I mentioned a while back how I have this little weak spot in my appetite for hot dogs, as in, I really like them! My mother would serve me those kosher ones (because she was, rightfully so I might add, a little freaked out about the mystery encased one) sans bun when she wanted to sneak some protein into me and didn’t have time to roast a whole chicken. And over the years, I’ve loved sampling the local specialty dogs (like in New York) and the vegetarian alternatives. I came about applegate farms hot dogs as I was trying to try new dogs (because I usually get the oscar meyer fat free ones). Ironically enough, we just had a whole week in my culinary school class all about making sausages and hot dogs. We actually encased ours in the real deal, sheep intestines! Even though ours were not light on fat, I must say they were probably way better than the nitrate infused stuff you find these days. Anyhow, back to Applegate (I wonder if there’s a Watergate?). Each dog is 45 calories, with 2 g fat, no carbs (actually, this factor is a great indicator that they don’t use any fillers), no sugars, and 7 g of protein. I LOVE that even a non-chemistry student can identify the ingredients! And the list is short! Organic Turkey, Water, Sea Salt, Spices, Paprika, Garlic, Onion! Alright, but heres the catch, the taste: well, ehh I’ve had better. It does have a nice turkey flavor, I’ll give them that, but the texture of this hot dog is so werid, it has the texture of a soy hot dog! Like sorty chewy, and the “snap” of the casing is a little to snappy, if that makes any sense. Its decent, don’t get me wrong, but I hate to admit that if your used to really good dogs, even really good fat free or vegetarian ones, this one is very different. I love the wholesomeness for nutrition, flavor is nice, but for crummy texture, this one gets a B.
