Athenos Black Olive Hummus!
July 9th, 2007 by hungry waif
Lately, i've been in search of more delicous but healthy spreads to spruce up my wraps and sandwiches. Now before i give a hummus review, let get one thing straight, I am a very biased hummus-er. Why? cause ive tasted the best (yes the BEST). My cousins live in very rural town in Israel (which is actually atypical since most of the populating lives in the big industrial cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa), and a couple miles from their town is a tiny arab village with a teeny whole in the wall lebennese restuarant where they make their own tahini fresh everyday. If you know anything about hummus, you know that good tahini is key. Anyhow THAT was the best hummus i ever tasted, so genereally, the packed stuff i find here in the states is very underwhelming. I digress...but my point i am hard to impress when it comes to hummus. So i thought i might as well give Athenos' Black Olive hummus a shot. Nutrtionally, very good (like most hummus) with 50 calories per two tablespoon serving with 3 g fat, 1 g fiber, and 1 g protein. No weird ingredients either. And guess what, me being all snobby about hummus and all, i actually really enjoyed this. I had this with my wrap, on top of a salad, as a dip for veggies and even as a dip for cold chicken strips! This was not like the one i got in Israel, of even close but it was yummy. the olive was not very dominant but i was ok with that and if you dont like olives, you still might really enjoy this. So try this if you spot it, and if by rare chance you make it to that teeny whole in the wall in that arab village, try THEIR hummus, you'll be in heaven!
Question!
I've never had hummus, but I've been wanting to try it for a healthier spread, dip, etc. Is the Athenos brand available at Wal Mart? Also, I feel dumb for asking this, but where in the supermarket/grocery store do you find hummus? Is it by the cheese and bagel dips and stuff like that?
not sure if Wal Mart sells
not sure if Wal Mart sells them, there isn't a Wal Mart in LA believe it or not. Some grocery stores sell it next to the cheeses (like i think Trader Joes does that) but some keep it in a different section.but its always refridgerated. But try to make your own there are lots of recipies for hummus online and if youd like i'll post one.
Thanks for the tip...always
Thanks for the tip...always refrigerated...embarrassing to admit I didn't know that! haha I'd love for you to post a recipe! I'm sure its always yummier and healthier to make your own, anyway. Thanks!
Oh yay!
That sounds really good. I just bought the Athenos Artichoke and Garlic Hummus....not much artichoke or garlic that I could tell. But, still not too bad. I like the Tribal brand, I guess it is? They make some good flavored hummuses (is that a word?)
Oh, and if anyone is interested, yes, I think they sell the Athenos brand at Wal-Mart. It would be near the deli in the cheese section (not the regular sliced cheese section.) I got mine at Kroger though.
thanks for the info! i'll
thanks for the info! i'll have to go look at my walmart...i hope they've got it. they don't even sell Flat Out or La Tortilla, which totally bugs me haha!
hmm...ill have to give
hmm...ill have to give tribal a try, although i warn again, i amight picky....and i actually got my athenos tub a Kroger too! (although Kroger in LA is Ralphs)
