Baji's Papadums!

India is very in at the moment. With “Slumdog Millionaire” up for an oscar (which it deserves) and Bollywood dancing being a fitness craze, its not surprising you find more Indian foods on supermarket shelves. Some people snub Indian food claiming they don’t like spicy food. Indian food can be spicy but most traditional dishes are “spicy” but more “spiceful” as in intense spices and flavors are used. I’m sure most Indians snub the packaged papadums that they sell on amazon or at whole foods, but this is what’s readily available to the rest of us wannabe Indians (because believe me, I DO want to be the lead heroine in Slumdog Millionaire, how gorgeous is she!!!) .  Papadums remind me of potato chips however they are clearly very different. Baji’s Papadums (available on amazon and whole foods) come in a bunch of Indian flavors like mango chutney and cilantro. But for the review, I decided to go for the regular kind.  A twenty two chip serving (1 oz) is 120 calories, 4.5 g fat, 17 g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugar, and 4g protein. Decent in the nutrition dept; I was especially surprised by the higher than expected protein amount.  I love these, but mind you, they are NOT potato chips. They are a lot less greasy and I find more dip-able for chutneys, hummus, salsa, guacamole, etc. Don’t count on it filling you up though; they are very airy, so supplement it with a substantial dip. I have yet to go to India, I think I’ll do the slumdog millionaire thing and start giving tours there for extra dough. Hey, the economy is in the toilet, I gotta do my part!
