I am now in charge of packing my man’s lunch every day. Let’s give him a name shall we; we’ll call him The D Man, cause his name starts with a D. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not Dumbo. So, since he likes to eat healthy but also likes to think he’s indulging I get to play around with dessert type snacks. We’ve done the 100 calorie packs, sugar free pre-cut cakes, an a couple others. After wandering aimlessly through the grocery store at top speeds I saw Handi-Snacks. Wow, those things reminded me of my lunch from times past. The crackers with the cheese “stuff” in the little plastic hole that you’d dig up that red plastic stick. Please, someone tell me they remember. But Handi- Snacks has branched out; they are no longer plastic stick dependant. They have you use the food as the dipping receptacle. Turning crackers and cookies into little sticks. I chose the grahams n’ apple dip, partly because of the happy looking graham cracker holding an apple on the front of the package. Awww. No refrigeration is needed, another plus for lunches, and it’s made with real fruit…not the wax kind. Each unit is 90 calories, 2g of fat, 1g of protein and assorted vitamins, minerals and potassium. The graham crackers alone tasted sort of bland. They had the graham cracker taste that’s always a little indefinable to explain but this one was too subtle. The apple dip looks exactly like applesauce and tasted like cinnamon applesauce. Actually, it tastes a lot like the apple filling that goes into apple pie. In that way, when I put the graham cracker’s crunchiness together with the apple pie filling like dip it tasted sort of like apple pie. I think this would actually be a good swap if your craving apple pie, since it’s portion controlled and, when I cut slices of pie, my eyes are definitely doing the thinking. I think I’ll try the Oreo sticks n’ cream next, it only has 140 calories. Being a child at heart, I really like being able to play with my food. And Handi Snacks lets you do that. So I really do commend them for figuring out a way to make it okay to play with food.
