I frequently read the eatlikeme blog on self magazine’s website. In case you don’t know about it, it is written by a registered dietitian so she often gets many questions on her comments section. I recently saw that someone was mentioning how they always hear how oatmeal is a healthy staple but that they simply don’t care much for. You know, I sorta agree although I’ve seen people really deck their oatmeal with some truly unique flavors. Anyhow, I never had it as my breakfast staple very often, I lean towards cold cereal ANY time of the day (trust me, I once polished off a whole cheerios box in a day!). I usually have had oatmeal when I was traveling and having one of those breakfasts you get for free in those hojo hotels. But I had the great pleasure of scoring a free packet of their Golean hot creamy vanilla cereal. 1 40g packet has 150 calories, 2 g fat, 25 g carbs, 6 g sugars, 7 g fiber, 9 g protein, and 100 mg sodium. Its pretty impressive nutritionally, more sugars than plain oatmeal but also more fiber and still low sodium. Plus, if you look at the other instant hot cereals out there, they contain A LOT more sugar and a lot of weirdo ingredients. But most importantly, the taste: awesome! Really, I am impressed. Its easy for hot cereal to be blah, but this vanilla kick and slight hint of cinnamon with this blend of oats was really very yummy. I must say, Kashi continues to impress me with they’re healthy products without sacrificing good flavor. Would I give up my precious bowls of cold cereal, no because I am addicted to them. But if the mood does strike for the hot side, I’ll buy this creamy vanilla Golean. BTW, has anyone seen the commercial for mini-wheats hot!? I used to eat those a lot as a kid (its was the closest sugary cereal my parents would allow me in the morning) but I never thought of heating them up! What a cool idea, no?!
