The Laughing Cow Light French Onion Cheese
September 19th, 2007 by Al
So this morning I got up and started on my review. But I was severely sidetracked when I started thinking about all the animals involved in the food industry. No, this isn’t going to turn into a rant about how meat is murder…that’ll be later (just kidding) I was actually thinking about product animals, Tony the Tiger, Skinny Cow, Trix the rabbit to name a few. Nothing really came out of this; I just pretty much scowered the Internet for an hour finding all the animal food mascots I could find. Anywho, the animal we will be focusing on today is the Cow. The Laughing Cow to be exact. This happy, pierced ear bovine brings us cheese in circles, triangles and cubes. He seems like a pretty cool guy and I liked his light Swiss original wedges so much that I picked up a 3 pack of them at Costco. It is now 3 months later and I’m ready for a little change. I decided to try the light French onion. As soon as I got home I was ready to give these a try, unfortunately I was sidetracked by the fact that the little stringy thing that magically zips around the perimeter of the box and magically opens it didn’t work. So I sawed away at the box for a bit and pretty much ended up ripping it to shreds. I’m skilled like that….
The cheese had a nice onion smell to it, not overpowering, it just lightly mingled with your nose and left quickly. And the taste? Its really cool, it turns anything you eat into an onion bagel. I took a couple of nibbles and tasted the onion bagel aspect, then slathered it on those unfortunate English muffins from the last review. It made the English muffin taste really good. I seriously felt like I was eating an onion bagel with a bit of shmear on it. If you don’t like onions, um, this isn’t for you. But if you’re not a big cheese person, this might actually work. For each wedge it’s 35 calories, 2g of fat, 2.5g of protein and 6% of your daily calcium. The nutrition doesn’t punch you in the face with it’s amazingness, but for people like me who are lactose intolerant, this cheese is great to eat a couple slowly throughout the day and add a little more calcium and protein into my diet without the..ummm…. bathroom aspect. And on that note I bid you adieu.
thanks al for the review,
thanks al for the review, you know i am not a fan of cheese, but if i did like cheese, id get this simply because i think its cute the cow has earings!
Good to hear!
I've been waiting for one of my favorite food bloggers to review these...and I'm so happy to hear that they were good for a Lactose Intolerant individual like yourself. I've been leery of these wedges for fear of the dreaded ...effects.... that some cheeses can have on my sensitive digestive track. With your review I'm going to be brave and pick up some wedges the next time they are on sale.
Sweet! I too join the
Sweet! I too join the Lactose Intolerant group and am always a little worried about my calcium intake. I'm not a big fan of cheese at all, but perhaps the extra flavor will help it out.
I wonder why they put that
I wonder why they put that kind of design on the container as it just seems to be an encouragement that you will feel good when eating it. I love cheese but have not tried this one as french onion does not sound good to me.
I'm not a big cheese person
I'm not a big cheese person either, but that's what I like about this cheese. There's also and original and garlic and herb flavored ones for those that don't like the onion. For those Lactose Intolerant I will eat 1/2 of a wedge at a time and I have yet to have a problem. Tell me if you end up having any problems.
