Strawberry Chex!

hungry waif's picture

I know loyal readers are probably irked by the fact the
reviews have been infrequent. But I’ve been super busy trying to enhance my
career. To catch you guys up to whats happening in the hungry waif’s world, I’m
currently studying to become a registered dietitian (combing my culinary school
education with my passion to help people).  And in the meantime, to make moolah (cause the
economy sucks) I’m working as a personal chef for a family on a gluten free
diet and that are generally trying to eat healthier.  Today at work, I had to get rid some the stuff
in their pantry that had gluten. Not wanting to waste, I decided to finish off
their box of strawberry chex.  A ¾ cup
serving is 130 calories, 2g fat, 26g carbs, less than 1g fiber, 8g sugar, and 1
g protein. Ok lets face it, this needed to be thrown out even if gluten wasn’t
an issue, bottom line is, this ain’t boasting much health benefits. Yes, the
sugar is relatively low compared to other kiddie cereals, but very little
protein, and very little fiber. I don’t rely on cereals to provide my protein
servings (although some DO surprisingly have a fair amount) but I definitely
like my cereal to have some fiber or at least if not a lot of fiber, very
little sugar. Why? Fiber fills you up and is satiating, so I’m not going back
for more of the addicting cereal (albeit, even high fiber stuff can be
addicting ;). Taste, um, it was weird. Like strawberry yogurt poured into the
chex mix batter and came out way to sweet and with that weird artificial
strawberry taste. Stick with wheat, corn, or rice chex, heck even the chocolate
chex was better. Gear up though for a bunch of gluten free food reviews.

This was one of those

This was one of those cereals on a tremendous discount at my store that I would not allow myself to buy due to the nutrition (and besides, I dun like fake strawberry flavor.)

I agree with you, and I

I agree with you, and I really wonder what General Mills was thinking when they made the strawberry Chex. They seem confused with constantly trying to expand their cereal lineup, and couldn't decide on Chex being for kids or adults .In the end they just tried to play it down the middle, and failed in both flavor and nutrition stats.

Gluten free!,I'm so glad I don't have that food allergy.
