Tofurky Roast and Gravy!
November 30th, 2007 by hungry waif
Reading through the very cool blog i often check, the weighting game with leslie (i will add it to our links;) ) i noticed some curisosity about tofurky but from a non-vegetarian. Ahh, what a great trial for myself. Although iam learning meats this term in culinary school, i wish we had a tofu class because its such a versatile ingredient! It comes frozen in this box and you simlpy open it up to find a big sausage like thing and all you need to do cut the ends off and take off the plastic wrap it looks like a giant uncooked tofu dog, then simply put it on a baking pan and cook it. It has a nice texture to it and it feels more like eating meat than Jello like soft tofu i am used to. I have had a lot of turkey in my time so i cant say its an exact replica, but its decent and hey, no real chance of getting salmonella (i had it when i was four, ehh dont want it again!. It is pretty low fat, low sodium, and there are no bones and almost no mess at all. 4 oz is 190 calories, 5 g fat, 26 g protein, 10 g carbs, 2 g fiber, and 1 g sugar. Similar to regular turkey in the nutrtion dept, except the carbs, of course. But it is still very high in protien so a good choice for non-turkey eaters. The gravy is actually tasty and i think essential because the turkey by itself can be a little, well not bland but kinda boring after a few bites. Anyhow, its no real turkey, i'll stick to the lovely free-range one i made this thanksgiving, but when Al comes over (shes vegetarian), i'll probably have some tofurky.
