Top Five Halloween Treats!

hungry waif's picture

So halloween is sometime next week and i read some other blog about this one guys top five best and worst treats and thought i'd do the same. Before i give my list, let me just begin my spiel about candy, halloween, health, and kids.  Ok, so yes, i know there is an obesity problem in American and that we should be encourgaing kids to eat healthier. But, i dont think restricting them from having candy is necessarily healthy. why? notice how if you swear something off, you crave it more. I think the same can go for children, telling them something is off limits is setting them up for rebellion.  Halloween is only once a year and the beauty of it is kids get some activity while trick or treating and most of the candies they get are individually wrapped so there is automatic portion control (no, "o well, i'll just finish of the box"" excuse).  Kids will only be kids once and they'll soon get to that age where halloween is no longer about free sugar and more about booze and egging houses (but lets hope they dont go that way either). anyhow i dont give out toothbrushes, apples, or raisins despite me being a culinary health junkie/foodie and all. As i kid i know for a fact my mother would make me toss out apples (snow white must have scarred her) and all kids avoided those toothbrush handing dentist's house. so heres the top five candies i like that i do enjoy around halloween because its not like iam polishing off the whole bar.

1) snickers, probably my favorite candy hands down. yes, o so carmely, chocolately,  nutty, and not exactly briming with health but a classic nonetheless.

2) Caramel Apple pops: o man i traded a lot to get my hands on one of these things. I enjoy them ad an adult too cause they has longer that your average lollipop and love that sweet and sour thing going on.

3) candy corn: cause they're festive and sort of melt in your mouth that makes me forget how much chemicals it took to make them that way because even just looking at them can make you smile with glee.

4) Junior mints: because a little goes a long way and although i am not a big "mint in your dessert" person (most just taste like toothpaste inspired treats), these are actually yummy and come in cute boxes around halloween.

5) Reese's Peanut butter cups: not my top favortie but an "oldie but goodie" because its o so simple. Chocolate and peanut butter

 Top Five Worst

1) Raisins: if i pick them out of raisin bran cereal, chances are i am not going to want them in my pillowcase candy bag

2) toothbrush: i have a Sonicare which has left me cavity free until now, i dont need your promotional toothdruch doc!

3) home made anything. not to be mean, i'd do the same, but lets be real here most mothers would toss this out unless they know you personally, for all they know it could be laced with anthrax

4) Sunsweet "Onesies": these are individually wrapped prunes, enough said.

5) pennies: i am all aoout moola, but with our bust economy pennies are worthless. if your going the money route, go for green!

and five not classic but would love to recieve today as an adult!

1) tolberone, ive seen them in mini sizes so they do exist!

2) kinder eggs: yea the chocolate is forgetable, but i love the toy!

3) silly putty: i know people are getting into giving non-food items, so this would be fun!

4) pez: cause they're retro and collectable, so s bit of an investment really

5) altoids: cause after all that candy your breath might stink and these curiously strong mints refresh nicely and their tin can double as a business card holder.

as far as candy goes i try

as far as candy goes i try to go low cal because it usually means lower fat:
nerds rope - 90 cals for one
3 musketeers mint - 150 ( i think they have the plain version in this size as well)
herr's chocolate covered pretzel rod - 90 cals
halloween size bag of Swedish Fish or Sour Patch kids - 60 cals
Halloween size bag of sweet tarts - 50 cals
mini 3 musketeers - around 30 cals for one (i know 3 is under 100)

yummy.
