You know there are a few things that put me in a better mood. Kind like the song from "The Sound of Music", I have a few "favorite things" which don't make me feel so sad. Personally, whiskers on kittens send chills up my spine and snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes piss the hell out of me (hey, I'm from L.A. where its 75 and breezy all year round). Brown paper packages tied up with strings make my suspicious of a uni-bomber or anthrax. So things that put me in a better mood are presents (free stuff, in general), family guy, fantasies of marrying "E" from Entourage and one of the trainers at my gym, and believe it or not, going to Trader Joe's. Why you ask? well, besides being good quality and cheap, the people that work there are so chill that I feel they are my pals. So as I was scanning the shelves, one of the employees grabbed a bag of their Roasted Plantain Chips and asked I'd like to try it. Many people that know me can attest that I rarely reject free anything, so i grabbed one, or two, ok, a handful. A serving (which is about 20 chips) is 140 calories, 6 g fat, 2.5 saturated, 20g of carbs, 1g of fiber, and 1g of protein. Considering that your average potato chips has similar stats, only maybe a little more fat, I'd say its an ok alternative, especially if your craving a salt/sweet snack (my ultimate weakness!). This is great if your an avid exerciser too because since its made of plantains, theres a healthy glucose source thats way better than skittles. i wasn't sure I'd like these. I love almost all fruits, but not really bananas. When i was sick, someone gave me a banana hoping it would make me feel better and I ended up feeling worse. So now, I have a strained relationship with bananas and plantains. But what I discovered is that its the banana texture i dont like, and this "roasted chip" form is fantastic, and addictive! They are less greasy than potato chips and a little more satisfying and filling than airy potato crisps. Plus, its roasted with a healthier oil (sunflower oil) as opposed to the really bad hydrogenated stuff you find in most snack foods. Good job, TJ's! And might I add, I actually do LOVE "schnitzel and noodles"!
