TV Show Review: A Lyon in the Kitchen
October 31st, 2007 by hungry waif
So i thought i'd review something besides food today, a food show. Since beginning culinary school, i've become really attune to what it takes to be a good cooking teacher. This makes watching a lot of food network shows hard. Some are great chefs but not so good teachers. Julia Child could do both, but its rare (and no, i dont consider Rachel Ray a chef). But Discovery Health has a new show called "A Lyon in the Kitchen". Nathan Lyon went to the same culinary school i go to (yes, the same branch even) but his premise is all about organic and healthy cooking. Hes not into calories or providing nutritional info about his meals, but he uses fresh and healthy ingredients. He was actually a contestant on food network's show (he lost, but still won in my book, hey he has his own show). I had the privledge to watch it this sunday, and heres what i think:
Nathan made this salmon en Papillotte with fennel and avocado salad. he also visited an organic chicken farm and used the eggs he got from there to make a spinach flan (?). Yea the food looked a bit..umm not appetizing. the flan looked a bit sad, the salad was colorful, but i am not big on avacado. I like his approach, i dont think one needs to focus so much on organic everything but its better than Paul Deen's butter dousing and Emeri's annoying BAM and "aww yea babe" (its food, not a pick up line!). I wish he'd explain why he's adding things and i he could turn down the engery a notch (reminds me of those pumped trainers that freak you out in the gym). But i wish i was as successful as him so i give him snaps to that, hey anything that gets people eating healthier is good.
