Ultima Pomegrante!

hungry waif's picture

Pomegrante was oh so in a few years ago, touted as the new "it" superfood.  It seems like superfoods like acai and goji berries stole its thunder. But alas, Barbara's Bakery (the folks that make my beloved peanut butter puffins!) came out with a new organic line called "Ultima".  They claim "Organic Pomegranate Cereal is bursting with the whole grains and antioxidants your body's been craving. Every tangy, sweet bite provides you with a great source of Vitamin C and D and the whole grains that contain fiber, vitamins, minerals, and essential acids your body needs. That's the Ultima way to start a wonderful day!". My thats a very sunny description, i guess anything to make you fork over the dough.  Anyhow, looking at the nutritionals they do have some justification in their health claims. Each 1/2 cup serving has 100 calories, 1g fat, 85mg sodium ,24 g carbs, 5 g fiber, 5 g sugars and 3g protien. Not bad, the only gripe i have is that they consider 1/2 a cup a serving! dense cereals like fiber one and all bran do that, but this has a bunch or flake and twigs in it making more "airy" to me as opposed to those grape nut/fiber one-esque cereals.  ok so lets get to the taste....It was nicely crispy (not overly crunchy) with a blend of twigs that resemble all bran, flakes that resemble raisin bran flakes, and little clusters of oatmeal.  I dont know where pomegranate falls into play here because i really didnt taste it. It had a nice slight sweetness, much like the kind in traditional cornflakes, but then again i wonder if pomegrante would even taste good in a cereal.  I think they just like using the pomegrante for pr purposes (aww, the poor pomegrante is getting played).  It was pricey (4.07 on sale!) but i guess its because it is organic with no werid ingredients.  I dont generally splurge on organic packages products, simply because i figure if i am already splurging on organic, i much rather do it with pesticide encased produce.  It is a yummy cereal overall but not outstanding and i love the peanut puffins a lot more! As for the pomegrante, yes, i think I'll take it straight up, via seeds.
