Uncle Sam's Instant Oatmeal!
July 14th, 2007 by hungry waif
Since seeing my nutritionist, I've been trying to pick up the habit of actually HAVING breakfast (not that i dont eat breakfast foods, i certainly do, i just eat them at night watching family guy re-runs). I just have never had an appetite in the morning, and i know its a good habit, but I cant be nutritional angel all the time. Anyways, my breakfast is usually more like a lunch, but my nutritionist convinced my its time to pick up this healthy habit and actually start having real breakfast (like, in th morning like normal people). Anyhow, i love cereal and i do eat it at night EVERYNIGHT (totally not kidding, i love it!), so i thought i might try something different for the morning. Scanning the aisles at the grocery store, Uncle Sam's new Instant oatmeal popped up and thought i would try it out. Oatmeal is not to heavy like bacon and pancakes, so maybe i can actually down this in the morning without feeling sick. 1 packet is 38g with 130 calories, 3 g fat, 5 g fiber, 5 g protein, and no sugars. Nutrtionally very impressive....but the taste? well what irked me most about this was the measly portion, 38 g does not fill even half my bowl! It tastes like traditional oatmeal but it did have this Uncle Sam cereal bit in the mix which added an interesting crunch. It was indeed unsweetened and hence a bit bland (i added some light maple syrup). It was ok, but i dont think i like oatmeal all that much. I had a feeling i was liking the cereal bits with the maple syrup more so i am going to figure that next time, i am just going to buy the Uncle Sam cereal and mix into it light maple syrup. But then again, i am trying to stray from the cereal for breakfast habit...hmmm maybe i will have to settle for eggs and pancakes.
Oatmeal really grows on you,
Oatmeal really grows on you, once you figure out your personal way to cook it (I swear, everyone like it differently!) Anyway, I really enjoy cinnamon and just a dab of salt in it, it's yummy!
salt? hmm, interesting, i
salt? hmm, interesting, i might try that!
best oatmeal ever
You have to try Dr. McDougall's Organic Instant Oatmeal, Light Maple Brown Sugar. I found it at Shaw's but it's also on Amazon.com. It's 150 calories, organic, only 6 grams of sugar, and no artificial sweetener. Although the Quaker Lower Sugar is only 120 calories, the portion is small, there's artificial sweetener, and it's not even sweet. This on the other hand has a large portion size, tastes perfectly sweet, and has a really great texture. Very filling and I hope you review it.
one more thing
I also forgot to add that you should always use the boiling water method. Microwaving always makes the oatmeal mushy-at least for me.
Have you tried Irish
Have you tried Irish oatmeal. I have purchased it at Trader Joes. I do not no the nutritiional content but the instant and flakes are very tasty.
nope, i havent, again i am
nope, i havent, again i am not a big oatmeal person because i usually skip breakfast and unlike cereal, oatmeal is a bit awkward to eat at 10 pm. But i'll give your suggestions a try!
Oatmeal was my go-to late
Oatmeal was my go-to late night snack in last year. It got me through so many late nights studying for finals. My roommate would be scarfing Chef Boyardee ravoli out of the can, while I would be enjoying my nice nutritious apple-cinnamon whole grain oatmeal.
