Van's Belgian Waffles!

hungry waif's picture

I am half Belgian, so when Van's claims to produce a frozen waffle and dares to call it "Belgian" i instantly become curious to see if they've mastered the fine craft of making the perfect belgian waffle. Well, i WAS impressed with the nutritionals. Two waffles have a mere 172 calories, way less than the waffles served at diners like dennys or IHOP. But i was very curious about the taste. The verdict: It was the right size, similar to a Brussel waffle in texture, but it wasn't as crispy as a traditional Brussel Waffel (there are millions of types of waffles, but Brussel waffle was the closest waffel van's waffel could resemble). I wonder if maybe baking it instead of toasting would create that crispiness...anywho it wasn't bad, but i still love the ones i get in Belgium. Its great for a lower calorie dessert with some whipped cream and berries!

I've given up on waffles being low cal. I usually eat eggo or pillsbury which are eentsy weentsy tiny itty bitty things and never fill me up. are these like eggo sized runts?

nope, you wont be disappointed with the size of these, they're an inch thich and nicely sized, but maybe not as dense as the eggos.

I make my own waffles with a waffle iron and some pancake/waffle mix with water rather than with eggs and milk (though you could probably use skim milk and egg beaters) and with sugar free syrup, it tastes great (and I get two for only 110 calories!)And then you can add whatever you want, such as chocolate chips:)

I never tried the Belgian waffles, i'm preety sure they're good tho. I love Belgian chocolate, it's ma favourite. From waffles i prefer Eggo Special K, they're 99 % fat free, so u dont have to worry about all those "empty" fat and calories :)
