Vita Muffin: Golden Corn Muffins!

hungry waif's picture

I think its funny how my gym sells vitamin water and dorritos. O yes, and they happen to sell my favorite flavor fritos too, chili cheese (yea, i know they are terrible for me, but those have always had a place in my heart).  Dont worry, they mark up the prices so much that i am guessing no onw buys them anyhow.  I gasped when the other day they had a whole vita-muffin spread.  Hmm, maybe they realize people going to the gym might be on a health kick and hence maybe thats why the doritos are left untouched.  Anyways, i found this a good time to try a new vitamuffin flavor, the corn or "golden corn" as vita-folk call them.  Actaully, my "muffin" wasn't much of a muffin, it was a muffin top.  I know people generally think the top is the best part so maybe this is their new shtick to get you to think your eating a whole muffin for only 100 calories. speaking of which heres the info on each "top": 100 calories, no fat, 25 g carbs, 6 g fiber, 9 g sugar, and 4 g protein.  Not bad i guess for a muffin, although i would like it to be bigger.  The ingredient list isn't laden with too many unknown chemicals (no HFCS and trans fats) so i guess this stacks up nicely compared to average muffins.  I have never loved nor hated corn bread, i wasn't raised in the south and my family is jewish and european so holiday bread, even on thanksgiving, was usually baguette, challah, or pita.  So my knowledge of cornbread is naive to say the least, i am used to the ones i got in my college dining hall (which resembled golden sponge cakes) and the ones they have at souplanation (which i DO find delicious!).  But to be honest, this vita tops were underwhelming. I little dry, maybe they NEED some fat or moisture to them, although i have had fat free muffins before that WERE moist so i know its possible.  Also, i didn't really get a good corn-bready flavor, it was more like plain, dense, corn scented bread.  So i am giving this a C+, i applaud the effort to make them more nutritious, but they must go visit Paula Deen for some pointers.

I've read more of this blog

I've read more of this blog recently so I would say that the way you feel about chocolate and yogurt is the way I feel about cornbread, grits, and all of my other Southern staples so I doubt I would like this.

That's A Shame

Because the chocolate Vita Muffins are actually quite good.

And I LOOOOOOOVE cornbread! REAL cornbread. So I guess I won't be trying these anytime soon. Thanks for the review!

I know, the chocolate vita

I know, the chocolate vita muffins are indeed decent (one of our first reviews, check out archives!) so this was dissapointing. I've had cornbread with real chunks of corn kernels inside which i loved, is that traditional? i have no clue, am a bit of a cornbread virgin.

Traditional cornbread could

Traditional cornbread could be said to be whatever your grandmother makes; so that would mean there are several different recipes with very passionate family ties attached to those styles.

I love Vita Tops

and the cornbread one is no exception. I actually think they are moist. Did they have it Frozen? They cannot be out more than say 12 hours. They have no preservatives and will mold within a day. I wonder if yours was dry from this? Anyways I order them from Vita top and the problem I have is they are NOT filling. They seem like they are but they are not not not! So I eat 3 or 4 before I feel I can stop. They are also expensive upwards of 1.50 each.

What gym? I wish my gym had them

la fitness is my gym, and

la fitness is my gym, and they may have bought them frozen and maybe let them sit out a while (i suspect this was the case). and yes, they are indeed not very filling and rather pricy, but they were almost the same price as those dorritos so i figured it was a fair and healthier trade up.
